Sex
Nature, and therefore God, made it enjoyable. So much so that many creative artists have described it as the closest thing to spiritual ecstasy that human beings can achieve of their own volition. Some religions are not just awed by this fact, but seem to be afraid of it and they surround sex with shame, guilt and mental conflict. I do not particularly want to get into an argument with Christians or anyone else, but what kind of perverse God would bestow a gift that he then forbids us to enjoy? A would-be Occultist must not be a prisoner. He should break the chains even if he decides to stay in the same spot of his own volition. I do not insist on this, but if you free your mind from irrational restraint, you will feel so much happier.
backNot at all. They are a necessary system of self-governance for communal life. But that is all they are and so I would look again at the ones that inhibit freedom without good cause and the ones that lead to a breakdown in health. People are what they are. They feel what they feel. Neither I nor anyone else can dictate what someone ought to be or ought to feel. The most we can do is: restrain each individual's behaviour just enough to safeguard the liberty of all individuals in the group. Occultism never forces anything on its students. They are perfectly free to pack it in and leave, whenever they wish. So if this kind of talk about morals happens to bring you out in a cold sweat, then let us by all means change the subject and talk about ... white rabbits. But then again, I know a joke about white rabbits so ...
backI would not say so, but it deals with sex so naturally that the topic may seem to loom large in the eyes of those who are nervous about it. Unlike most Christian sects, we do not disapprove of sexual behaviour at all, provided it all takes place in a suitable place - not among the cornflakes on the breakfast table, for instance. We also regard sexuality as a human skill that ought to be developed in order to provide more pleasure. Of course, a committed Christian might regard the minutest quantity of sex as pure filth and unbridled lust, but this is his bigotry and hardly a fair comment. It is illuminating to look for an explanation as to why this one religion in particular is so 'hot' about the subject, when most of the others are either indifferent or totally relaxed. It is believed that certain cosmic energies are generated by sexual activity; after all, we are so enthusiastic about having babies, we'd go ahead and breed even if it was painful! So why make it so tremendously exciting? Hinduism and Buddhism developed Tantra as a special esoteric study in which the power behind sex is the focus of attention.
backDoes this attract sordid people?
There are speedier ways available for perverts to find satisfaction so they do not stick to Occultism more than a few weeks. If titillation is your goal, then you should look elsewhere. Of course, the gods may lead someone's footsteps towards Occultism in order to rid them of some corruptive influence, and if they are initially drawn by sexual desire, they soon identify this sordid interest for the evil that it is, and they then develop more wholesomely.
We do not believe that sex is inherently bad, although we would agree that 'bad sex' does exist. Despite the views of other religions, the Devil has no great interest in any of this. He is said to be a fallen angel with lots of feathers, but as an angel, whether upright or fallen, he has no sexual organs. The church designed a mask that it attached to the image of Satan, and since this came partly from ancient gods, like Cernunnos and Pan, aspects of animal sexuality were painted on it too. There is also an element of 'inner knowledge' or 'secret wisdom' about sexuality because, at the end of the day, it is an awesome manifestation of power and cosmic energy. Perhaps the churches did not want people to discover how it might be used.
backElectricity is one form of energy, yet it too can perform several functions, e.g., give light, cause heat, emit x-rays, move things, make long-distance communication possible and so on. But while providing all these benefits, it can also prove fatal if it is wrongly handled - and a similar thing can be said about sex. It can do a great deal of good, or a great deal of harm. It can heal and it can damage. It can strengthen your mind or destroy sanity. It can open the door to a secret power in magic or it can slam that door in your face.
backOne of the aims of self-mastery is to obtain access to heightened states of consciousness. When your senses are energised and your perception is raised, your soul is liberated from the flesh. It is capable of seeing much of the truth for itself. In this way, more progress is made, and it is achieved in much less time than would otherwise be the case. When this happens, many of our questions become unnecessary because we perceive more of the truth. Priestly religions have tried to make sex taboo in order to close those doors and keep the knowledge of truth in their own hands.
If sexual activity could be improved, made more fulfilling, or raised to the level of 'a communion with the gods', then that would have an immense value to us as human beings. It would liberate new powers. It would enable us to think of some derring-do!
backIt is a way of harnessing the creative forces of the cosmos in order to focus them on your magical work and your spiritual training. We must not be afraid that sex is nice. Cosmic law does not forbid matters for such simple reasons and it is wrong to assert that unpleasant or nasty things are somehow beneficial for the soul. That is the point of view advocated by Puritans and is totally unnatural. The central act of Christian worship is based on food and drink, i.e. that which sustains life. It is not really all that different to regard the creation of life as something sacred too?
backIs there a second type of sex magic?
Yes, and this one has the straightforward practical aim of helping men to achieve sexual fulfilment and happiness. This is brought about by first assisting them to eradicate all fears and correct any misunderstandings. It is a man's natural duty to make his woman happy in order that the pair of them may be propelled toward a magnificent state of mutual ecstasy. By using magic, it becomes possible to boost the pleasure of orgasm twice, thrice or even a hundredfold and, far from being evil, this renders the soul proof against nervous illness, diabolical attack and even madness.
backI hear there are 'magical sex acts'?
Magical sex acts is just a coy term for topics that many people find a little too delicate to discuss freely. It is normal to do a little fasting in order to whet the appetite, e.g., "I am not eating any lunch because I want to enjoy the celebration meal tonight". In a similar fashion, a little sexual abstinence can have a wonderful effect on one's orgasm. One can go a step further though and practice a kind of magical masturbation which trains one to become master of one's urges instead of being enslaved by them. This is a logical concept, but that naughty word masturbation tends to have something of a shock effect, doesn't it? Can anyone today honestly claim that they never masturbate? And if it is such a common practice, wouldn't it be marvellous if we could make it a source of empowerment?
backThis is going to be my big obstacle.
Don't be silly, please. We are talking about saving your life, and helping Nature to achieve her cosmic goals! Are you willing to put all that in jeopardy just because of your juvenile hang-ups? When it dawns on you that Mastery of Self is possible, I think you will find the courage to cope. I once made a special set of recorded cassettes called 'Excalibur'. They were talks aimed at helping people to come out of their shells and build a happier life. I turned these talks into a book which appeared in late Autumn, 2001. In Excalibur, I explain that Occultists believe in less frequent sexual activity but of a much higher quality. Is that something to be afraid of? Are you a man or a clockwork mouse?
backHence the saying: one man's meat is another man's poison! It is not my fault if you have unhelpful attitudes toward sex or suffer from subconscious guilt feelings. Perhaps it would be better if you took control of your life instead of behaving like Peter Pan and veering away from it. Shyness, timidity and nervousness are not desirable qualities. They do not give one a good start in life. Nevertheless, you are free to adhere to your own opinions and to 'go down with your ship' if that is your attitude, but you do risk causing a total blockage of any magical career.
backOf course I have, and I regularly mount a public performance in front of nosy folk who ought to have better manners. I should also warn you that I have pronounced sadistic tendencies and like to drag members of the audience onto the stage to perpetrate eye-opening atrocities on them. - Only joking.
backDo you mean to say that nature did not supply you with any? I am afraid that I am not qualified to do transplants. I will never forget the last two wretches that I tried it on. One became an officer in a hermetic order, the other became an usher in an Occult bookshop.
But if sexual relationships are our natural right then we are allowed to pursue them and acquire them by any honest means. So the answer is yes, we are allowed to use magic in order to win the affections of another person ... but we may not force them or oblige them to do our will.
backIf we are honest, we could all be better lovers, but what you probably mean is: could magic help you to improve your performance and both give and obtain greater satisfaction. Have I got it right? If so, the answer is: most probably. But if you mean: will you become a full-time fantasist (as opposed to being a part-time nightmare), the answer is no. You can improve your allure, your technique, your health, your outlook, and the amount of energy that you generate for other magical workings. You can build on what you are, but you cannot alter the being you are. And my answer assumes that you are in all other ways a normal human being.
