Knowledge
What is this 'cosmic law' you refer to?
The Greeks first conceived the notion of 'primal chaos' – a state of unformed disorder. Out of this the gods shaped the 'cosmos' by imposing a state of order upon it. In the process, they also created a certain 'balance' between the two states. Elementary physics shows that merely by lifting an object, i.e. raising it against the force of gravity, we transfer kinetic energy to it. As a consequence of having been lifted, it now has the capacity to fall. In a similar way, within the order of the cosmos there exist the forces that would pull it down.
Parallels exist in every aspect of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual reality. For example: (a) the extent to which a human being may be wicked is related to the extent to which he could be good, (b) the extent to which a soul may be attacked is related to the extent to which it can defend itself, and (c) the power that will can generate is related to the power to which it is subject.
It is one thing piously to marvel at the wonders of the universe, but another to see the principles according to which that universe was created. Not everyone is concerned with such obscure points, but those that are may perceive that they represent a kind of 'inner knowledge'. It is not so much forbidden .. as beyond one's mental grasp.
backIs inner knowledge kept for a chosen few?
No. It is available to all who are capable of claiming it. That said, one has to be suitably humble and wait for the appropriate time. The day will come and the hour will arrive when a person may rightfully put on his powers and assume the role with dignity. Until that time comes, he prepares himself.
You do not wear occult robes in bed and neither do you go to meet the Beyond dressed in slippers and pyjamas. What sort of fool would march into battle protected only by a fig-leaf, or take his ease in the garden while encased in steel armour? Inner knowledge is not kept from you-it lies beyond your reach. If you cannot grasp it then you are not ready for it and it is no good weeping or gnashing your teeth. These matters have nothing at all to do with being the Master's favourite. We are not allowed to show you stuff that might destroy you. Like children and sex, we must not expose you to subjects that your innocent mind would be unable to handle. Alas, curiosity kills far more than cats!
backDoes a Master reveal his secret knowledge?
This is not laid down in the Master-Student contract and neither side is allowed arbitrarily to shove in new clauses after both of you have signed. The Master's goal is to 'actualise' your full, natural potential and so make you happy. If you are a future Initiate, then you will not be fulfilled until he has guided you towards the fuller knowledge. What he must never do though is to provide you with knowledge that would lead to mental or spiritual disintegration. So the answer is no, a Master does not reveal everything as a matter of course.
backThen access to 'knowledge' is denied?
I did not say that. You are being petulant and difficult. All I said was: you do not get 'the lot' as a matter of course. That wasn't the agreement that the Master signs up for. There is nothing to stop you looking for more knowledge if you know how, but remember: you are not entitled to intrude on the Beyond. Furthermore, the path itself is esoteric, i.e., you need to speak before you learn the alphabet, and you need to read before you can write. Knowledge comes in steps, much like the pyramids in Guatemala.
backThere are three reasons. One, we must protect people from the potential dangers of such coruscating power. Two, the churches have made society hostile and intolerant even though the churches' own influence is waning. Three, there are wicked people about who co-operate with the powers of Evil and we do not wish to reveal our hand.
The general public wrongly equates Occultism with Evil, and members of religious groups have been fed a set of pernicious ideas. The law might forbid them to burn us at the stake, but they will still ostracise us and make life as miserable as possible. I have one student whose mother is a Jehovah's Witness and she now expects him to die just for becoming an Occultist.
It is also possible, as was the case with dynamite, to turn the powers of magic into a destructive force. A Master has to play safe. He waits; he watches, and he looks at the way you use your present knowledge before he gives you more.
